What are the values for the range card codes?

07/30/96

While this is not technically an error, the information is difficult to find in the documentation; this should be remedied for the second version of HRS Wave 1.

Range cards are only present in Wave 1, and were one method for getting more specific information from respondents who did not know exact dollar values, particularly of assets and income. Their use was preferred by some interviewers over use of the bracketing questions also available to them. The range card values are found in the Coding and Editing Instructions (file CODING.TXT in INSTRUCT.EXE). That section is also copied below.

RANGE OF VALID CODES FOR DOLLAR FIELDS: Please note that,
due to the use of a "Range Card" for DK answers to $ fields,
the code values are as follows:

(999)9979. $(999)9979 or more -- This is the
code to use when an actual amount is
given by R which exceeds our field
                        width.
